Based on its geographic position and its connection to the global environment, the Asia-Pacific region is deeply important for Japan. The same connections apply for medical issues as well. Thus Japan has been active in the Confederation of Medical Associations in Asia and Oceania (CMAAO) since its inception in 1956. As its name indicates, this organization builds connections among medical associations in this region by promoting information exchange and other activities aimed at improving the health of all citizens in the Asia-Pacific region. CMAAO comprises 17 national medical associations as of December 2008.
The JMA has served as the Secretariat Office for CMAAO since September 2000.
